Once upon time there was little Toffle, who lived alone in his house, which too was a lonely house.

The start of the story of Tove Jansson's little hero is certainly sad. And it's as woeful as Toffle faces the world in search of friends with tight shoes on his feet, a traveling bag in his hand and a mind filled with complexes. Alone he hobbles past the happy whompers and hemulens without the courage to shout "Hello there!". But on the journey Toffle encounters a surprise. He finds a message in a bottle! Suddenly he becomes great and courageous as he goes to save a little weak miffle girl from the terrifying Groke.
